UBRFC off to a flyer after wins over Birmingham
After several weeks of training and hours spent in the gym and out on the training paddock, UBRFC's season got underway with our first preseason friendlies against the University of Birmingham. The games were broken down into four twenty-minute quarters, allowing both teams to try out new combinations and personnel.
The 2s kicked off first with a vastly changed side from last year's team, and a fast and expansive start meant Bristol led after 20 minutes. To their credit, Birmingham worked their way back into the game over the next three quarters, and it took a last minute try from Bristol for the 2s to eventually pull away, winning 29-24 to get the season off to a strong start.
It was then over to the 1s, who were debuting our new Surridge strip, sponsored by Alvarez and Marsal. Unlike the 2s, the 1st XV have benefitted from having many of last year's side return for the full pre-season, and this ultimately paid dividends, as after a slow start, Bristol started to play to their new framework and began to run rampant, winning 53-12, despite some adverse weather conditions in the second half.
The 1s and 2s will hope this great start can continue onto next week, when UBRFC takes a trip to the Midlands to take on Nottingham away in the second of our preseason friendlies.
