UBRFC end 2018 with another set of wins
As a club, UBRFC is now unbeaten for three weeks straight, as the 1sts, 3rds and 4ths all racked up wins to close 2018 on a high. Unfortunately, the 2nds game against Aberystwyth was called off due to poor traffic across the Severn, but it leaves them suitably refreshed ahead of their continuing cup run post-Christmas.
The spotlight game this week however is the 3rd XV. Comprised primarily of our newest additions to the club, the predominantly 'freshers' side played their first game under the floodlights on the 4G against Bath, a team they'd narrowly lost to earlier in the season away from home.
An early pen from James Gostick settled early nerves, and from there, the 3s never looked back. Ball retention was superb, and resulted in four tries in the first half, putting the lads 25-0 up at half time. Try of the half was Miles McDuffus' finish from the halfway line, pinning his ears back and scorching the opposition fullback
In the second half, it was more champagne rugby, with a further five tries scored. Matt Hackney continued to dazzle the opposition with his footwork, whilst MOTM Alex Jewson carried direct and hard all evening, setting a platform for the likes of Charlie Crawford, Rory Carroll and Freddie Turley to profit out wide. This meant Bath were run ragged all night, with the final score being 54-0 to Bristol.
Sadly, this game was also the last time Coombe Dingle will be graced by the coaching expertise of Jules Springer (UBRFC Clubman of the Year 2006/7). 'Jigsy' has overseen several years of freshers' rugby, with hundreds of boys playing under him and looking back at their Bristol days with fond memories. Best of luck in NZ Jules - never forget the swag!
