On Friday (4th May), UBRFC played host to the first ever games of XRugby7s at Coombe Dingle. A variant of the sevens game we all know and love, X7s is played on a smaller pitch with 'scoring zones' of 7 points 'under the posts', and limits on numbers in rucks, mauls and line-outs.
Six teams took part in this first edition of X7s at Bristol. Fresh from the back of their successes at the BUCS 7s tournaments over the last fortnight, UBWRFC brought along two teams, and were joined by representatives from UBRFC's current crop of freshers, as well as teams from Churchill Hall, University Hall and The University of Bristol Engineering Society (TUBES).
Teams were split into two pools, and eventually the final was played out between TUBES and Churchill, in what was a nail-biting affair, but one that ended in a tie at 26-26. Fun was had by all who either took part or came to support, and UBRFC would like to thank all of those who made the effort to come down on Friday night.
Looking ahead to the 2018/19 season, X7s will be introduced alongside the current intramural league, as well as forming a key part of training programmes for the BUCS performance teams next year. If you are keen to take part in X7s, or just want to get some more information, please contact our X7s and intramural administrators Angus Wardlaw and Ben Davies, both of whom have details on our contact page.
